-  It has one branch office in South Gondar Zone at Debre-Tabor

-  There are 13 employees out of which 6 are females

Membership:

- It has about 2965 members and is one of the strongest chambers in the 
  country  

- In North Gondar Zone there are about 2318 registered active members

- In South Gondar Zone there are 647 registered active members 

Services:

- Provides training for the members(on areas like Improve Your Business, 
  Record  Keeping, Basic Business Management, etc.)

- Gives advisory services for the members both in group and individually based 
on the members need

- Provides secretarial services ( photocopy, typing, duplication, translation) 
  on fee basis

- Facilitate trade fairs and exhibitions

- Discuss with the regional government on tax issues and other relevant 
  matters on behalf of the local business community


 

Dessie Chamber of Commerce

- It has about 6 staffs including the General Secretary

- It has a branch office in Kombolcha town

Services:

- Provides training services for the members 

- Prepares and facilitates trade fairs and bazars

- Gives secretarial services ( typing, duplication, translation, etc.) on fee basis

- Represents the interest of the business community

- Information provision

- Gives 10 months training for 12th  complete students in the fields of  Secretarial Science and Office Management on fee basis

Opportunities:

- Large base for membership

- The existence of support giving institutions

- Experience sharing with similar institutions

Introduction

The Mekelle Chamber of Commerce is an autonomous non-governmental, non political and non profit organization that acts on behalf of its members. It is an independent representative of the business community in Mekelle, Tigray, vis-à-vis the regional government and is established to put forward the opinions and interests of the business community it represents. It was officially established in December 1992 and obtained membership approval of the Ethiopia Chamber of Commerce since then. Currently the chamber has over 800 members involved in various business areas.

In order to further speed up and properly achieve its establishment goal, new board members were elected in its 8th congress it convened on 20 April 2002. It has also improved and strengthened its human, material, and financial resources that are appropriate to duly and efficiently accomplish its day-to-day activities. 

1.    Vision:

To be a leading and dynamic Chamber in east Africa by creating  innovative and competitive entrepreneurs who can develop trade and investment and effectively compete at national, regional & global business ventures.

2. Mission:

Strive to promote trade and investment compatible with the country's free market economic principles by  protecting and promoting the opinions and interests of its members through serving as a bridge between the government and the business community, providing various appropriate business support services, and promoting exports.

3. Objectives:

  • The Mekelle Chamber of commerce established to create a conducive environment for developing and growing business in Mekelle faster has generally two major categories of services: advocacy / representation services and direct support services. And more specifically it has the following objectives.

  • To support and promote business by supplying appropriate information  and services;

  • To provide technical assistance, training and research to  enhance the quality of economic activities;

  • To create and /or promote a more flexible and hospitable economic environment with additional focus on small and medium businesses;

  • To encourage and promote business ventures that contribute to a large employment base;

 4.  Major Activities (Services):

The core activities of the Chamber are targeted at alleviating business problems by creating suitable condition and enhancing the entrepreneurial know how of business persons in Mekelle so as to develop and expand trade and investment. In precise terms, the following are the major activities of the Chamber.

  • Collecting and disseminating useful information on business matters;

  • Organizing and conducting appropriate training program;

  • Organizing commercial publicity and trade fairs;

  • Arbitrating business / trade disputes;

  • Providing counseling services on certain aspects of business activities (investment project profile, banking, export/ import matters, etc.);

  • Facilitating the  development of business premises and related infrastructure by mobilizing the business community;

  • Issuance of certificate of origin for domestic / local/ products.

The Board

The Board of Directories consists of the president, vice president and other nine members elected by the General Assembly for two year period.

The Staff

The Mekelle Chamber of Commerce is manned by a team of committed & dedicated staff headed by the secretary general. The MCC has 7 staff members, for purposes of providing efficient and effective services to its members.

Nazreth Chamber of Commerce

- Established in March 1972 as an autonomous chartered and non-profitable
  organization

- It is led by a Board of Directors constituted from government institution and
  the private sector

- It has one branch office in Debrezeit town

Membership:

- It has about 12000 members in 12 Districts of the Zone which covers
  19 towns

Source of Income:

- Registration fee from new members

- Annual membership fees

- Other service fees

Major Activities and Services:

- Training service

- By conducting training needs assessment and based on the request of the
  members it
gives different training courses like Basic Business Management,
  SYB, IYB, CEEF, Basic Accounting, Marketing, Hotel Management,
  Tax Levying and Administration

- Information Service

   - Collect, compile and disseminate market information

   - Prepare and disseminate project profiles

   - Provide local and foreign trade information through Trade Documentation
     Center

- Provide advisory services on:

     - Financial request

     - Project ideas

     - Raw material purchase

     - Quality management

     - Import-Export Trade

- Marketing and publicizing services

     - Organize exhibitions and trade fairs for members

     - Organize seminars and workshops for members

     - Facilitate experience exchange

     - Publicize the outcome of international economic trade research activities

Jimma Chamber of Commerce

- The Chamber has got 593 active members of whom 424 are female

- Its average monthly income is 9085.62 Birr

- Its monthly average fixed recurrent expenditure is 9772.32 Birr

Services:

- Provides training services which promotes trade and investment

- Support in advertising local products both inside the country and abroad

- Provides and distributes business information

- Gives advisory services

- Support in conducting market study

- Support the members to participate in local and foreign Trade Fairs and
  Exhibitions

- Aware the members on policy matters and regulations

- Gives  Secretarial Services on fee basis

Shashamane Chamber of Commerce

        are male

      - It has 8 staffs of which 7 are non-professional and have only one professional staff

      - Its average monthly income is about 8000 Birr

      Services:

      - Renders secretarial services ( typing, translation, etc.) for its members

      - Organize training

      - Gives counseling and advocacy services

      - Provides information service

      - Organize profitable events like trade fairs, etc

     Problems:

      - Lack of qualified staff

      - Poorly organized office

      - Government bureaucracy

      - Reluctance of the business community for membership

      - Trainers are not efficiently used
