Introduction
The Mekelle Chamber of Commerce is an autonomous
non-governmental, non political and non profit organization that acts on
behalf of its members. It is an independent representative of the business
community in Mekelle, Tigray, vis-à-vis the regional government and is
established to put forward the opinions and interests of the business
community it represents. It was officially established in December 1992 and
obtained membership approval of the Ethiopia Chamber of Commerce since then.
Currently the chamber has over 800 members involved in various business
areas.
In
order to further speed up and properly achieve its establishment goal, new
board members were elected in its 8th congress it convened on 20 April 2002.
It has also improved and strengthened its human, material, and financial
resources that are appropriate to duly and efficiently accomplish its
day-to-day activities.

To be
a leading and dynamic Chamber in east Africa by creating innovative and
competitive entrepreneurs who can develop trade and investment and
effectively compete at national, regional & global business ventures.
2. Mission:
Strive
to promote trade and investment compatible with the country's free market
economic principles by protecting and promoting the opinions and interests
of its members through serving as a bridge between the government and the
business community, providing various appropriate business support services,
and promoting exports.
3. Objectives:

The
Mekelle Chamber of commerce established to create a conducive environment
for developing and growing business in Mekelle faster has generally two
major categories of services: advocacy / representation services and
direct support services. And more specifically it has the following
objectives.

To
support and promote business by supplying appropriate information and
services;

To
provide technical assistance, training and research to enhance the
quality of economic activities;

To
create and /or promote a more flexible and hospitable economic environment
with additional focus on small and medium businesses;

To
encourage and promote business ventures that contribute to a large
employment base;

Major Activities (Services):
The core activities of the Chamber are targeted
at alleviating business problems by creating suitable condition and
enhancing the entrepreneurial know how of business persons in Mekelle so as
to develop and expand trade and investment. In precise terms, the following
are the major activities of the Chamber.

Collecting and disseminating useful information on business matters;

Organizing and conducting appropriate training program;

Organizing commercial publicity and trade fairs;
-
Arbitrating business / trade disputes;
-
Providing counseling services on certain aspects of business activities
(investment project profile, banking, export/ import matters, etc.);

Facilitating the development of business premises and related
infrastructure by mobilizing the business community;

Issuance of certificate of origin for domestic / local/ products.

president, vice president and other nine members elected by the General
Assembly for two year period.

The Mekelle Chamber of Commerce is manned by a
team of committed & dedicated staff headed by the secretary general. The MCC

services to its members.
