Business Planning for Small Enterprises

A business plan is one of the most essential documents involved when starting, building and managing a successful business and it is an effective tool for raising the necessary capital as well as capturing the interest of investors. The business plan is the document that clearly and concisely defines the goals and objectives of a business, outlining the methods for achieving them. The business plan describes what the business will do, how and where it will be done, and how the business will be financed and managed. In the following please find two simple business plan templates for business start-ups and small businesses.

It is easy to find a complicated Business Plan in the Internet and elsewhere, but it is difficult to develop a Business Plan adapted to micro and small enterprises!

The following drafts of business plan templates for start-ups and small enterprises have recently been developed. Download the detailed templates with instructions and give us your comments on how to improve (download: businessplans-startup-micro-small.doc 375 KB).

Business plan outline for micro and small enterprises:

  - Personal data of business owner / partners

  - Short business profile

  - Production plan (production and sales overview; machinery and equipment; raw material
requirements; utilities, infrastructure; labour; administrative and production costs)

  - Market study (customers and market segments; competitors; marketing strategy to win
customers and overcome competitors; list of suppliers)

  - Cost calculation (fixed capital, working capital)

  - Financing (own funds, loan required)

  - Profit and loss statement (gross sales/profit, operating expenses, net profit after tax)

BDS workshop in Aden

BDS workshops in Yemen successfully organized

Two BDS workshops in Sana'a and Aden have been organized by the EPSP Business Development Project (Yemen-German Cooperation) in June 2006. Practical exercises with participants from private sector related partner organisations together with small business owners - carpenters, tailors and car-mechanics - on how to carry out a needs assessment and an action plan for BDS support, have shown some main problems of Yemeni SMEs and possibilities for concrete BDS support activities:

 - Contact lawyer for regular services in case of sales on credit problems together with
   Chamber of Commerce.

 - Contact taxation expert for regular services in case of taxation problems together with
   Chamber of Commerce.

 - Organize meetings and training on sales on credit and taxation together with professional
   associations and Chambers of Commerce.

 - Organize meeting to discuss common supply of raw materials.

 - Assist tailor and carpenter associations to get finance for two BDS facilitators for each
association in order to deliver regular and permanent services to their members and
   accumulate experience for self-help.

 - Organize technical advise visits to tailors and carpenters businesses by qualified trainers
   (on-the-spot advice).

 - Many accidents in carpentry! Collaborate with Ministry of Labour. Get overview on
common accidents. Organize class-room and on-the-spot training on workshop security
with carpenters because of many work accidents. Develop security technologies and
   publish manual.

 - Business Management: Introduce standardized customer contracts (e.g. with 30-50%
advance payment), standardized adapted low-level bookkeeping (cash book, customer
   records, bills) and savings accounts.

 - Develop and organize short-term group trainings on bookkeeping, cost calculation, simple
   business planning, marketing and taxation.

These may be some of possible BDS support interventions if BDS would be implemented in Yemen in the near future. Have a look on the very detailed BDS workshop report including all training materials: bds-workshop-report-yemen-2006.doc (4,6 MB)
