Introduction
Women
entrepreneurship in Ethiopia is a growing business trend.
Slowly, but surely, Ethiopian Women are making a significant headway
in the business world by venturing into almost all business sectors.
The
formation of the Ethiopian Women Exporters’ Forum is fitting manifestation
of this growing trend. Established
in January 2000, the Ethiopian Women Exporters’ Forum aims at bolstering
the organizational and technical capacity of members and arm them with that
extra competitive edge to excel in the export trade and the entrepreneurial
capacity to stand up to the challenges of international trade and commerce.
The
Forum aims to achieve these goals by employing various strategies like the
provision of training, consultancy, business advice, information etc.
Main
Objectives of the Forum
With
its head office located in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian Women Exporters’
Forum has the following business objectives:

Facilitating
experience sharing among members by creating a strong working bond among
Ethiopian women entrepreneurs
-
Promoting
the role played by Ethiopian women in the overall economic development
of the country to the local, regional and international communities.

Organizing
training programs for members on various business aspects with due
emphasis on export trade.
-
Establishing
a modern information center, through which members will be able to
acquire information, relevant to their business activity and to keep
them abreast of worldwide development.

Organizing
exhibitions, through which members could display products they export
and also providing assistance for members to participate in
international trade fairs, symposiums and similar forums.
-
Creating
conductive conditions for exchange of experiences and information with
similar associations and forums both at home and abroad

Sectors Members of the Forum are involved in

of the forum are engaged n the export, among others, of coffee, spices, bee
wax and honey, natural gum, civet, textile, ready-made clothing, tea,
leather products, meat and live animals, sugar, beverages, cereals,
Ethiopian handicraft and souvenirs, oil seeds, fruits, vegetables, flower
etc.
Future
Plans of the Forum
The
Forum has set the following short and long term plans for the realization of
its objectives:

In
order to effectively promote the Forum, members have given due attention
to the preparation and distribution of magazines, brochures, flyers etc.
depicting their activities and get advice on how to bolster the
competitiveness of the products they provide.

Organizing
trips and forums which will help in bolstering trade relationships both
locally and abroad.

Organizing
training programmes for members.
A
fairly young organization barely two years old, the Ethiopian Women
Exporter’s Forum is an innovative approach to forge a strong bond among
women engaged in the export trade. Since
its inception, the Forum has been laying down the groundwork to establish a
viable framework, which would benefit its members.
It will also strive at creating a wide networking with both local and
international stakeholders and turn Ethiopian women into a formidable force
on the international business scene.
